HMBMDC Rescue Report ~ November 2007

Things have slowed down somewhat the last few months.

Good news, Gracie and Brutus that we wrote about last issue have great new homes. Brutus is now living in Spring Lake with Marta and Bob Harris. The last e-mail I got a few days ago was titled “Brutus Rocks”. He has become such an addition to his new family they are sending me notes of his antics. He now shares the bed while watching football and has dashed the old rule about not getting on the couch. Brutty has convinced them life is so much better with a Berner on your lap than at your feet, they agree!!

Gracie is enjoying her new forever home living with Mike and Carol Ranville, in Charlotte. She is still the “wild child”, but is very happy. Gracie’s new family is working with Laurie Griffith and Annette Wibert on controlling her natural exuberance.

Abby arrived and we found her to be a very sweet girl. Very quiet, but willing to play. As of this writing (11/9) she is still here. She has been with us for about 7 weeks, and again we have gotten attached. She has re-learned how nice it is be part of a family. When she first came here she did not want to come in, now she asks and has taken over our bed as her afternoon snooze spot. She and “Bob” have become great friends; they chase each other around the yard and wrestle.

Abby is ready for her new home. She will not need a lot; she is sweet and friendly, relatively out going. She is spayed and no health issues, but she may have an elbow issue as she favors the right occasionally. She is loosing weight and looking great. I am going to insist on a real fence for her. She has had some sort of trauma to her neck, either physical or emotional. She will flop down and become dead weight when her collar is grabbed, she is fine if you are just clipping on a leash, she is ready to walk. Due to her neck issue and having been tied outside, Linda, Patt and I think an invisible fence might be a bad idea for her. We have had several good homes that will take her but either no fence or invisible fence. She likes to roam the yard and I promised her that she would never have to be tied up again.

We were contacted about a male, “Thunder” with progressing aggressive behavior. These people would like to try to keep him but need help with modifying his newly increasing misbehavior. We have put them in touch with several behaviorist and they have joined the Aggressive and Shy Berner yahoo group. She is working with the advice, and with Thunder with mixed results. We are hoping for improvement, because of Thunders negative inter-dog reactions he could not be fostered with us. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

We just received a request for help with placing 2, almost 3 year old female siblings together, there names are Angel and Gracie (so this will be Gracie #2). Their owner has recently relocated and changed jobs. The “girls’ yard is greatly reduced and they are left alone too much for their owner to accept. So she is seeking a new home where they can have room to run and people to spent time with them. They have no issues and are spayed, house broken and loving. We are going to try to fulfill her hopes to find a big fenced yard that can accommodate them both.
